Released in 1982, blade runner is based on the novel by Philip K. Dick Do androids dream of electric sheep?. Set in a dystopian world in alternate 2019, it follows an exhausted cop tracking down a fugitive group of synthetic humans, known as “replicants”, who have escaped to Earth. The film stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young and Edward James Olmos. Although initially underperforming at the box office, the film became a cult hit and went on to become one of the most influential films of all time.

In 2017, Denis Villeneuve directed the sequel Blade Runner 2049. The film brought back Ford and Olmos alongside Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, Mackenzie Davis and Jared Leto. Ridley Scott has since teased his desire to continue the blade runner story with additional films. This idea evolved into the concept of the live-action series which is now firing into high gear at Amazon Studios. It’s unclear if any cast members will be involved in this new series, given the change in timeline.

During this time, the franchise also expanded into the world of animation. Alcon has teamed up with Crunchyroll and Adult Swim to develop the animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, which premiered in November. The animated series is set in 1932 Los Angeles, following a replicating female protagonist voiced by Jessica Henwick. The strong voice cast also includes Will Yun Lee, Samira Wiley, Wes Bentley, Brian Cox, Josh Duhamel, Peyton List, Stephen Root and Barkhad Abdi.
