Most artists I know joke that after taking an investigative art course the discussion leaves Europe after Van Gogh – post-impressionism, perhaps after sprinkling Max Beckmann – l German expressionism. Then the professor would lead the lecture “across the pond” to New York and American Abstract Expressionism, ignoring post-war Europe. Ab-Ex or Formalism quickly became the punching bag of the 60s, with its anti-war and feminist contextual projects, as well as Pop Art, embellished by Madison Avenue advertising. However, the artists of a war-torn Europe, reacting to the “massive deaths of WWII, the Holocaust and the hydrogen bomb (4)”, had a different perspective, having suffered emotional collapses and economic.

Hal Foster’s “Brutal Aesthetics” deals with European artists; Jean Dubuffet and George Bataille de France, Asger Jorn from Denmark, Eduardo Paolozzi from Italy and America, Claes Oldenburg of Swedish origin.

“Brutal Aesthetics” begins with the art / philosopher Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) whose essay, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction (1935)”, contemplates the uniqueness (aura) of art – poignant in light of the present day Fake-news. Foster, through Benjamin, explains the escape with Disney products. Benjamin guess, “Mickey [Mouse] cartoons are so popular because they offer “enormous relief” to Europeans rocked by catastrophic war, intensive industrialization and economic catastrophe (4). Perhaps this is why Marvel Comic’s blockbuster “Black Widow” offers an escape from the Covid pandemic? However, Foster’s five artists do not portray the escape; they are reacting to the horrors that resulted from the two world wars.

Jean DuBuffet Monsieur Macadam 1945

Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) who founded Art Brut comes from a wealthy family of wine merchants from Le Havre. Leaving art school and eschewing aesthetic beauty, he incorporated thick oils with gravel, tar and straw. Foster writes: “Dubuffet sought a ground for his work in ‘art brut’, which he approached … through children’s drawings, the graffiti of the common man and the art of fools (27) . He continues: “Dubuffet turned to children to ‘unlearn’ what they had not ‘yet’ learned, the conventions of visual realism; on the other, he sought to transform the childish vices of synthetic incapacity, arbitrary color, etc., into modernist virtues of his own art (37). Dubuffet loved graffiti long before it displeased former New York Mayor Rudy Giuiliani. For him, “the graffiti image is attacked at the very moment it is made; representation and destruction converge here (38). Sorry Rudy, Graffiti is now gallery approved. Dubuffet also turned to the art of fools, because it is shameless and “does not anticipate any spectator and does not recognize any public (46)”. And what about the classic nude, which has become the antithesis of Dubuffet’s art? Foster suggests that the nude has always been “linked to a very traditional notion of form, and Dubuffet brutalized it even more than … his predecessors (58)”. Hitler and his colleagues loved the classic and considered any form of abstraction to be the work of the madman and therefore of the degenerative.

George Bataille (1897-1962) is Reims; his father was a tax collector. Trained in philosophy, he first turned to surrealism. He became fascinated by Lascaux where the rock art depicts men killing not only beasts, but each other. Regarding Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he writes: “Man is the only animal that kills stubbornly and furiously (71). Bataille rationalized the horrors of the two world wars through Lascaux who “invites us to remember a time when human beings wanted only superiority over death … not” utilitarian mastery ” [that is] peculiar to our time (100). He considered Lascaux as the “birth of art” (75).

Asger Jorn Untitled (Les Anges de Raphaël) 1949

Asger Jorn Untitled (Les Anges de Raphaël) 1949

Asger Jorn (1914-1973) was a Danish artist; his parents were teachers. At the end of the forties, he founded the COBRA group (Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam) which is interested in “the arts of tribes, children and madmen”. Jorn was fascinated by “Norse myths, Viking monuments, medieval frescoes, rural churches, as well as flea market paintings (105 106)”. Foster writes: “his entire Cobra production is a concerted attack on the classic aesthetic, which for Jorn is also [attacking] classified aesthetic (112). Jorn poses: “The truth of the human animal is a continuous movement from state to state, from good to bad and vice versa (125). Foster concludes: “Jorn sought to overturn the old (hierarchical) order of art, but only so that a new (egalitarian) could be put in place. “The painting is finished,” said Jorn (134).

Eduardo Paolozzi Evadine in Green Dimension 1952

Eduardo Paolozzi Evadine in Green Dimension 1952

Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005) was born in Leith, Scotland, to Italian immigrant parents. He, too, “came out of the Second World War disillusioned with the humanist tradition in art”. Paolozzi was a member of the neo-brutalist wing of the “Independent Group (IG), a motley team of artists, architects, curators and critics forged in the melting pot of post-war Britain”. Paolozzi writes: “We were concerned with seeing the materials for what they were: wood of wood, sand of sand…. New brutalism [became a] materialistic realism versus the mock order of an emerging American advertising culture (139). In truth, opposing the post-war New York art scene has become a losing battle. In particular, IG member Richard Hamilton (1922-2011) was a leader of the British Pop Art movement, as evidenced by the fact that I lived / worked in a community center in the East End of London, in the summer of 1968 (140).

Claus Oldenburg lipstick (croissant) on Caterpillar Tracts 1969

Claus Oldenburg lipstick (croissant) on Caterpillar Tracts 1969

Claus Oldenburg (born 1929) was born in Stockholm but grew up in Chicago when his diplomatic father was appointed consul general. Everyone loves his outdoor sculptures, supposedly Pop Art. Foster deepens his discovery: “the environment of production, consumption and industrial waste included the world of Oldenburg”. He continues: “Note how this heist is different from the product-scape of Pop-art, to which Oldenburg is too quickly assimilated (196). ”

Many Oldenburg indoor sculptures are constructed from vinyl fabric. Foster writes: “Oldenburg envisioned its softening as a ‘death blow’ to the ‘functionality’ of the object as well as to the ‘classicism’ of the sculpture (225).” Oldenburg’s work, “Lipstick (Ascending) on Caterpillar Tracks, 1969”, has become one of the strongest anti-Vietnam symbols. The fake tank was parked outside of Yale Commons (dining room). Yale alumni disapproved of the anti-Vietnam protests and had the art withdrawn at least once. The sculpture points to the American military-industrial complex, while the semi-puffy phallic vinyl lipstick on top not only coaxes the Pentagon weakling, but hints at Yale’s reluctance to allow female students, which s ‘was finally produced in the fall of 1969. However, in the spring of 1969 when “Lipstick” was posted, this author could only date / marry a man from Yale.

“Brutal Aesthetics” is not an easy reading, as many art philosophers dot the pages of their theories. Don’t back down! – Foster pushes an understandable narrative cover to cover. Looking at what Dubuffet, Bataille, Jorn, Paolozzi, and Oldenburg accomplished, reveals that all the hype around America winning the war, had much undisclosed under currents that still persist. In his essay, “Critical Criticism and Society (1949)”, theorist Theodor Adorno (1903-1969) wrote: “Writing poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric (10)”. Artists are responding to the social and environmental ills that continue to plague us.

The accusations of queerbaiting have been plentiful in our recent pop culture discourse, widely launched and dispersed against many celebrities, the most recently accused being Madonna, Billie Eilish and repeat offender Harry Styles. The allegation in brief: That apparently non-queer stars are ‘appropriating’ queer culture and aesthetics in order to gain the financial support and position of LGBT fans, without actually committing to publicly identifying as queer . He claims that this facade allows them to rub shoulders with the perceived nervousness of queer identity – without the cost of openly occupying one in a queerphobic world.

A central tenet of queerbaiting criticism targets the often evasive statements of celebrity sexuality. The comments that drew much criticism of Andrew Garfield’s queerbaiting line flatter “(I’m) a gay man right now without the physical act,” to statements that refute labels, like Ariana’s Tweeter stating that she [hasn’t labelled her sexuality] before and again [doesn’t] feel the need for]”. Then there are those who draw inspiration and maintain a playful ambiguity, like Harry Styles. proclaim “We are all a little gay”.

For critics, especially Harry and Ariana, these feelings are a way of avoid being explicitly queer; it allows celebrities to occupy that liminal, hazy space on the gender and sexuality spectrum – a plausibly deniable queerness. Another side of the charge is the “appropriation” of a so-called queer aesthetic. Harry ditched River Island, the Topmaniac trends that dominated his One Direction years, opting for more dandy and baroque tastes as a solo artist. This new style, which has evolved to make minor advancements in gender nonconformity – the nail polish, the beaded earring, the frilly blouse – has seen overwhelming and histrionic praise from heterosexual society, and one Vogue blanket in which he “revolutionary” wore a blazer over a dress.

Criticism goes that from the point of view of safety and the vantage point of his fame on the red carpet, his palatability and ostensible “righteousness”, Harry’s gender nonconformity is an easy feat, praised. and worshiped as transgressive for the same reasons visible members of our community are fiercely rebuked in the streets. The implication is that the praise and bravery he receives for services rendered to nonconformity is a stolen trophy: his robes and camp boas are uniforms and badges of honor, which he cannot to wear without having publicly declared in friendship and in favor of Dorothy.

Even James Charles, the enfant terrible eternally mired in the beauty community drama, and a gay cis man, has faced adjacent intra-community criticism: that he appropriate the trans-feminine aesthetic of the ” doll ”to simply post airbrushed pictures of himself in a dress and wig.

And yet these arguments rest on a hypocritical essentialism that must be rejected, even when directed at hyper-capitalist TikTok e-boys wearing skirts or beleaguered beauty gurus. This is not to say that adornment – the way we dress our bodies in a world that is constantly evaluating it – cannot be radical, cannot be an outward expression of inner truth, but these relationships are unique and individual. , and cannot be prescribed. In this arena of expression and becoming, queerness has no designated gaze. It may seem like our gender nonconformity is hard won, its presence and glorification in public spaces the result of our relentless struggle against the grain of normalcy. But it is not our property. The queer counterculture cannot be bottled or claimed. Gender and its manifest signifiers have no domain, no rulers or legislators, no oaths of allegiance, and certainly no price of admission.

Much of this criticism can be traced back to celebrity weirdness as only valid if it’s stated explicitly in public spaces and conversations, or if it’s executed according to expectation. Ambiguity is considered a sin. In Harry’s case, this manifests as a frustration that his alleged bisexuality continues to be inferred and criticized rather than explicitly stated by him, or that some sort of compelling evidence has not emerged proving that he also fucks people. men.

Prior to its widespread applications to those in the public eye, the critique of queerbaiting began life as an indictment leveled against the machinery of literary and cinematic storytelling; the act of paying lip service to canons and sources often more explicitly queer, but disinfecting them, so as not to alienate more conservative markets and sensibilities. Representation has often remained firmly anchored in the innuendo, looks and inference of the 20th century celluloid closet. It was not a criticism of romantic politics or an individual’s dress choices, but a criticism of intrigues and producers, cowardly directors and censored scripts.

But as the line between brand and stardom has worn away in the Kardashians and Jenners era and Stay focusThe same is true of the distinction between the authentic emanations of the agency and those in which they are simply receptacles for the merchant. It’s easy enough to see the logical leap from criticism of on-screen characterizations to applying that same criticism to the characters and expectations that celebrities play and ostensibly play with, as part of their branding. But it is also this context that betrays the fundamental instability of launching a queerbaiting critique on living people and not the fictitious contexts whose creators were designed to be held to account. Namely, it is an accusation that can only be made to the icons and idols whose pedestals give us their inner life, a great and distant fiction – more of a soap opera projection than any material fact. We can’t accuse him of queerbaiting without necessarily prescribing that he’s not queer – our estimates of his relationship to queerness are just a hit in the dark.

We yearn for superstar idols whose beatifying touch and worship motto could uplift us and our queer cause if only they had a skin in the game: proud, explicit skin.

It is no coincidence that Harry is perhaps most singularly plagued by accusations of queerbaiting. He is, after all, an idol – one of the brightest and most prized of our pantheon of stars, wielding vast and disproportionate cultural power. Its existence in popular culture is emblematic of our parasocial relationships with celebrities. Harry is, to millions of adoring fans, a proxy for dreams, a divine symbol of beauty and success who is more akin to a pin-up girl on a bedroom wall than a human being. with an agency.

This space is ripe for fantasy, and out of it was born a sentimental right to a pantomime, weirdly aligned version of Harry waiting in the headcanon for fans around the world, to sweep them off their fan-fictional feet. It’s been a decade since these shared fantasies became increasingly meticulous and manifold in the cauldrons of Wattpad and Tumblr; one who saw Harry and his setting, personalized and performed to every possible specification; traced and entangled in our desires and machinations like Sims on a screen. At the root of many accusations of queerbaiting is often a spiky response to a denial of romantic and erotic fantasy – an upheaval at the breaking of an imaginary, conditional, and distant romantic possibility with those accused of “baiting” them.

But often woven into the undercurrents of frustration is a more vulnerable kinship desire; a search for conscripts in the culture war, a greater number and a visibility by which we can resist our oppression and our erasure in the public and private spheres. We yearn for superstar idols like Harry and Billie, whose beatifying touch and worship motto could uplift us and our queer cause if only they had skin in the game: proud, explicit skin. Much like the appropriation critiques around gender nonconformity, the argument acknowledges a material injustice: on the one hand, that many queer people are fighting for their lives and livelihoods (and desperately seeking of those who will take up arms with them); on the other, the bitter double standard of the praises heaped on such stars, when those who are at the origin of this aesthetic are confronted with daily violence in the streets.

Both strands, however, fail to address the structural factors that keep gays and queers away from full participation in rights and resources – instead of confronting only the symbolic. This leaves us to guard and defend the realms of our own weird and narrow pie, rather than questioning the institutions that produce the little slices of performance that we fight royally for. So we need to stop accusing Harry Styles of queerbaiting.

Queerbaiting criticism of public figures, rather than being liberating for queer people and communities, has a deleterious function – it further essentializes queer identity, distilling it into a list of aesthetic and done tasks. This forces them to choose words to define, or in some cases confine, their experiences of gender and sexuality into forms that are pleasurable and recognizable to us, their audience. It’s a bitterly ironic reversal of the demands that a heterosexist society has spent time immemorial wrongly asking us.

This kind of queer control often has messy consequences, like forcing stars like Rita Ora to outside themselves to tone down a barrage of criticism or prevent others from being upfront about their sexuality in the first place. It may seem, at first glance, that some celebs want to have their queer cake and eat it, too, but fair queer practice requires that we grant everyone the agency talks about and self-determine their sexuality – even in the vaguest of times. terms – whether or not they have the experience, public performance, or “credentials” to underscore that identity. It is a critique which, taken to its natural conclusion, makes queerness not a site of possibility – of freedom and conspiracy – but a place of rules.

This ultimately wrongly assumes that queer desire and identity can be regulated, contained, dictated. It can’t. It iterates, restarts, finds new and different words, and sometimes none.

    ALAMAT

The boys from ALAMAT are starting to warm up.

With the success of their first single “kbye”, now carefully stored under their
proverbial belts, members Taneo, Jao, Mo, Tomas, Valfer, R-Ji, Gami and Alas are
ready to take it to the next level with the release of their new single titled “kasmala”.

“Kasmala” is a rambling pun on the Tagalog word “malakas” which means
    strong.

This eight-member Pinoy pop group kept busy and worked hard
since their debut at the beginning of this year. In addition to crossing the million mark of flows on
YouTube with their clip “kbye”, ALAMAT had a remarkable career
impressive stage for such a young act.

ALAMAT has the distinction of being the fastest OPM group to enter Billboard
The next Big Thing rankings with their impressive debut in the top 2. Currently, this is the highest
position in the charts for a new act of Pinoy. ALAMAT also impressed the music
trend-setters with their dance pop sound tinged with modern R&B mixed with style
which is clearly rooted in the Filipino aesthetic.

For their brand new single “kasmala”, ALAMAT raised the stakes on the sound level. AT
in tune with the times, their new song is produced by a Swiss music production
    team called The Kennel.

Viva Records enlisted the help of the Stockholm-based music team described as “one of the most successful independent music publishers, having written and produced music over a hundred No. 1 hits”.

And of course, in typical ALAMAT way of proudly pointing out Pinoy, songwriter Thyro Alfaro wrote the lyrics to “kasmala”. Essentially, the new single is a
collaborative mix between Swedish and Filipino music production company
    musicians and songwriters.

A director of Viva Records describes it as “a high-caliber musical production used by K-pop.
acts meets the best Pinoy lyricist of his generation. And throw in a talented,
Disciplined, stylish and beautiful play like ALAMAT, it’s a mix of dynamite!

Thematically, “kasmala” defends the indomitable spirit of Pinoy.

According to Jason Paul Laxamana, Creative Director of Ninuno Media, the new
song carries a strong message. He said Filipinos have always been strong in the
    face of diversity.

That the song “kasmala” is a reminder to the “Filipino companions who
we too have always been subject to hatred, dehumanization and prejudice
throughout history. ”Adding that despite:“ We will not be broken.
will persist and continue to prosper. We will endure. Because we are strong. We are
    “Kasmala”.

A few weeks before the release of their new single, ALAMAT’s social media pages have
been illuminated by artistic and elegant photos inspired by the
    #StopAsianHate campaign, hence Laxamana’s comment.

The same teasers, plus the anticipation of the release of their new “kasmala”
the track and the backing clip generated so much buzz for ALAMAT that
they burst onto Billboard’s Next Big Thing charts a few days before the new track
    fall.

For their part, the boys of ALAMAT are focused on the laser to make this outing bigger.
and better than their first. And in the context of what they have already achieved in
so little time is really saying something.

The track “kasmala” will be released on July 15th at 6pm on all music streams
platforms. Likewise, the backing clip directed by Jason Paul
Laxamana will debut on YouTube the same day.

ALAMAT’s “kasmala” is released by Viva Records.

ALAMAT has garnered considerable attention for championing a Pinoy sensation at their
    aesthetic.

The eight-member group made a point of emphasizing a modern theme that
not only highlights several Filipino languages (Tagalog, Ilocano, Kapampangan,
Bicolano, Waray-Waray, Hiligaynon and Bisaya) on their songs, and modern
an aesthetic of fashion and style that is distinctly Pinoy.

As we look forward to a bright future for dressing up and experimenting with clothes again, the on-trend fairycore aesthetic promises the world of our dreams!

Fairycore fashion 101: 4 outfits you should try to achieve that dream aesthetic in 2021!

The past year and a half of emotional and physical turmoil has led most of us to seek out outlets and ways to express ourselves – fashion can be one of many! Escape, daydreaming, introspection, and spending a lot more time on our phones have also led social media giants like TikTok and Instagram Reels to become major hubs for upcoming creative fashion trends. . One of the recent trends of “Gen Z” was the aesthetic of fairycore.

    What is fairycore in fashion?

Fairycore, also known as faecore or faeriecore, is a playful and ethereal ‘internet aesthetic’ in fashion, propagated by Gen Z users of TikTok and Instagram in 2021. It draws heavily on natural elements and colors. and loose silhouettes – which makes it very similar to the cottagecore aesthetic. The difference between the two is the sense of mystery and whimsy in the fairycore. Elements commonly used for the fairycore aesthetic pretty much hit the mark for the time and are in line with other dominant fashion trends for the year.

With such a complex and rather subjective aesthetic, much is left to the interpretation and creativity of the wearers. Fairycore sits somewhere between whimsical and daring grunge, with an emphasis on where your outfit can take you – pastels can remind you of spring, earthy colors are symbolic of cozy cabins and lush forests, and floral prints or gingham checks may have you nostalgic for a country picnic. These elements, along with avant-garde vintage-inspired corsets, sheer fabrics, puffy silhouettes and more, give the finishing touch to an outfit that matches the peaceful world of your dreams!

We did the research for you and came up with some really fun, stylish and modern fairy outfit ideas – let’s improve our wardrobes and experiment together!

Upon hearing the news that the whole country was shutting down and all non-essential businesses were shutting down with no reopening in sight, a seemingly selfish thought crept into my head: What will happen to my Botox? In the midst of a global pandemic, I quickly learned that I was not alone. According to a survey conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 64% of plastic surgeons have seen an increase in telemedicine consultations during the pandemic. The procedures that generated the most interest were eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, facelifts, liposuction, tummy tucks and breast augmentation.

It didn’t stop at consultations. Despite uncertainty about the future, annual statistics from the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of the Aesthetic Society revealed that Americans spent more than $ 9 billion on cosmetic surgery in 2020.

“I have never been this busy in my life,” says David W. Kim, MD, a facial plastic surgeon in San Francisco, Calif., Who specializes in rhinoplasty procedures and has been booked throughout the year. . “We closed for a few months, like everyone else last March. I was just preparing for a really tough year and then once we started to open the floodgates opened. It became the busiest year I can remember. What caused this boom in aesthetic treatments at a time when self-preservation was paramount? According to the experts interviewed here, the answer is multi-layered, but whatever the reasons, we know cosmetic treatments are on the rise and show no signs of abating.

    Personal improvement

In addition to wearing a mask, Dr Kim considers the wellness factor to be a major motivation for his patients. “I think having more bandwidth to do something about a concern that bothers you is probably the main reason, but so many patients have said that if it wasn’t for the pandemic, they wouldn’t might not have. Even older patients who have waited their entire lives for rhinoplasty – the pandemic has prompted people to take stock of their lives and what is important to them. Many people have become more interested in fitness, nutrition, and general self-improvement, and plastic surgery is just one part of it.

    Control factor

In the United States, 42% of those polled in a CDC survey reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression, an increase of over 200% from 2019 results. Clinical psychologist and founder of the center COPE psychological, Dr Rubin Khoddam, explains that just like getting a new haircut after a breakup, regaining control is a way of dealing with anxiety and feeling good again: “So many of our daily pleasures have been removed, and taking care of aesthetic concerns is a way of feeling pleasure, novelty and even control.

“Improving how you feel is a very effective way to regain a sense of control,” says New York facial plastic surgeon Konstantin Vasyukevich, MD. “Many people find comfort in shifting their attention from external events that they cannot control to their internal feelings about things that can, which sometimes manifests itself in their physical appearance.”

    Fighter with fatigue

London plastic surgeon Yannis Alexandrides, MD, said despite England’s three lockdowns, an increase in cosmetic surgery served a dual purpose for some of his patients. “It’s a double effect,” he explains. “You take advantage of the fact that you’re not working, but it also gives you a psychological boost and you’re like, ‘Well, I don’t really waste time if I do something that I’ve always wanted to do. ‘”

    Build confidence

Chicago plastic surgeon Michael Byun, MD, says boosting self-esteem is another reason for the rise. For one of her facelift patients, Silvia Rios, 61, matching her outer self to a new confidence she had gained with age was transformative. “Some women honor the lines of their face because they tell the story of what they went through, but for me it was more attractive to create a new story with the new emotions that I was going through,” explains- she does. According to Dr. Khoddam, plastic surgery has been shown to have positive psychological benefits: “Research has shown that most people who undergo cosmetic procedures express satisfaction. However, there is also a large population of patients who have unrealistic expectations or who were previously dissatisfied with their surgery and who have been shown to have poorer mental health outcomes. “

    Find balance

While some things like cosmetic treatments, vacations, and retail therapy can give us a sense of ‘hedonistic bliss’, Dr Khoddam points out that more modest self-care strategies ultimately give us ‘eudaimonic’ feelings. or satisfied more lasting. “Taking care of yourself is taking care of the outside and the inside,” he says. “While the outdoors can have an impact on how we feel, I view self-care strategies as small, momentary things that help us stay in balance. It’s the 10-minute walk, the five-minute morning meditation, or reading a good book before bed.

Improving the way you feel about yourself is an effective way to gain a sense of control.

    -Dr. Vasyukevich

While the “Zoom Boom” is often cited as the reason for the recent surge in surgery, our obsession with looking at ourselves was widespread long before Zoom, and a recent study identifies selfies and filters as the culprits of perception. altered self.

“In the past, people were used to seeing themselves in a mirror, but today people see themselves so much in selfies that they have a distorted view of themselves,” says Steven Dayan, plastic surgeon at face in Chicago. “The sight of yourself in a selfie is the inverted image of what you see in the mirror, which is a completely different image than what we look like in a traditional photo or someone looking at us straight in. the eyes. So there are actually three versions of how we look: the mirror, the selfie, and how other people actually see us. “

The study identified the version that participants found the most appealing: Subjects were asked to look at themselves in a selfie, a filtered selfie, and then a standard photo taken from 5 feet away. When asked to rate each one, each participant chose their filtered selfie. When other people looked at the same photos, the most popular images were those taken from a distance. “We’ve learned that people like their selfies better than natural photos, but other people don’t find selfies as appealing,” says Dr Dayan. The end result is an uphill battle for surgeons, he explains. “The challenge then is to make the patient happy when they want to match a filter, when in reality that doesn’t make it better. “

SEOUL, Jul 10 (Yonhap) – What is Korean aesthetics?

“DNA: Dynamic & Alive Korean Art,” a new exhibition organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Korea (MMCA), is an effort to answer this question.

The exhibition, which takes place in the MMCA’s Deoksu Palace wing in central Seoul, brings together works of art from various formats, genres and eras to highlight different facets of Korean aesthetics.

Under the four themes “Sacred and Idea”, “Elegant and Simple”, “Decorative and Worldly” and “Dynamic and Hybrid”, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey transcending time to explore the definition of Korean aesthetics.

The exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to admire different works of art which are usually exhibited in different halls or exhibition venues in one place.

For example, Korean abstract master Kim Whan-ki’s iconic dot painting and 15th-century Buncheong celadon bear a resemblance that transcends 500 years.

An 18th-century portrait of Joseon-era beauty by legendary painter Shin Yun-bok is on display alongside a 1978 painting by Cheon Kyeong-ja that shows a woman with a cigarette.

Shilla-era gold crowns, designated as a national treasure, are on display alongside modern craftsmanship inspired by meticulous jewelry.

Another highlight of the exhibit are four works of art that are part of the extensive “Lee Kun-hee Collection” that the family of late Samsung President Lee Kun-hee donated at the end of April. This is the first time that the collection is presented in Seoul.

The exhibition covers works of art in various formats ranging from pottery, Buddhist statues, crafts, sculptures, paintings and even media arts to show how artists have expressed the Korean aesthetic in different ways. .

It also features works by a hundred artists, ranging from masters of the Joseon era Kim Hong-do and Shin Yun-bok to more contemporary stars, such as Kim Whan-ki, Lee Jung-seop and Paik Nam- june.

The exhibition runs until October 10.

NetherRealm’s gear system was a revolutionary mechanic in fighting games that only served to improve the genre, and it deserves to be back.

While developer NetherRealm Studios has made a name for itself with the iconic and disturbing deaths of Mortal combat, they needed something more docile. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was hampered by the restricted use of fatalities, and the Injustice the show was going to need something to give it an edge. While Injustice settling for a cinematic story mode, it was only with the gear system that they landed on their new niche.

The gearing system was introduced in Injustice 2 and allowed players to customize their favorite fighter in aesthetics and stats to create a fighter unique to anyone else. Mechanics like this were largely unknown in the genre at the time, and it took players a while to get used to them. While the player base remains divided over Injustice 2the use of gear, he still made a comeback for Mortal Kombat 11, more refined than ever. Now that Mortal Kombat 11 has officially completed its development cycle, fans are already starting to wonder if the gearing system will make an appearance in the upcoming NetherRealm title.

In Injustice 2, the equipment system includes a variety of customizable parts that could change a fighter’s appearance. However, besides the aesthetics, it also changes the stats of each fighter. During the initial introduction, players felt that this hampered the integrity of the game, as now skill was not as much of a factor as who had the most numbers. While this is true to a point, the game has remained balanced enough that players never run into this issue too often. Mortal Kombat 11 later changed this keeping the aesthetics and competence largely separate, with MK11the equipment being purely cosmetic.

While MK11 may have limited a character’s cosmetic changes, they expanded when customizing a character’s movements. Each character had a few basic special moves that were always present, but they also had three slots for custom abilities. Now each player could modify their special moves, like Scorpion’s teleport punch with a flaming charge or give a character the ability to teleport. Plus, the unlockable features entice players to spend time with the characters to learn the best movement set for a character. An XP counter attached to gear also unlocked a few slight bonuses, but these had a minor effect on gameplay.

Both Injustice 2 and Mortal Kombat 11 also put the equipment system to good use with an AI combat mode. In this case, players could pit their AI fighters against each other by customizing Habits, Gear, and Abilities in order to unlock gear or, in Injustice 2It does, Mother Boxes. The level of freedom a player has to inadvertently create a fighter benefits the community because now each opponent, even if they are the same character, plays differently from the previous one. The number of variations created by the variety of equipment and bonuses keeps the online community fresh in a way that could not have been done in previous installments.

NetherRealm’s gear system is one of the most unique and unprecedented mechanics in fighting games. However, due to its rarity in the genre, it has been given the freedom to expand and evolve in various facets of online battles. There is still a lot of potential in the tank for the system, and returning in their next title, it could have the opportunity to evolve even further.
