Marvel Studios announces that it will soon be launching a “mini studio” dedicated to animation, which will see other projects like What If …? join the MCU.

With What if… ? around the corner, Marvel Studios announced that this will not be the last animation project created by the production company.

Victoria Alonso, Executive Vice President of Film Production at Marvel Studios and one of the key figures responsible for creating the MCU alongside Kevin Feige, spoke to Variety about the company’s first foray into animation, revealing that a “mini studio” will help usher in more lively dishes. “We’re going to have our animation branch and our mini studio, and there will be more to come as well,” Alonso said. “We’re super excited about the animation, which is my first love.”

Alonso started her career as a visual effects producer until she worked on Iron Man in 2008, where she added co-producer to her resume. From 2012 The Avengers, she became an executive producer for Marvel Studios projects, and she has served that role on almost every MCU movie, show, and short film to date.

What if… ? will be Marvel Studios’ first animated project, and it looks like it’s tied to the MCU – especially given the finale of Loki. Whether it was a successful outing or not, it looks like the company is already gearing up for more excitement. The article also mentions that Alonso claims that “a few more shows” will arrive before the end of the year, but it is not clear whether these will be unannounced animated shows from the mini studio or if Alonso is simply referring Ms. Marvel and Hawk Eye, two more Disney + shows coming this fall.

“When the chance to be a part of this streaming world came along we were more than excited because all of a sudden we could actually give fans well over a quarter page or three cool moves.” Alonso continued. about how Disney + made Marvel tell more stories, which What if… ? will illustrate by exploring alternate versions of the MCU. It also means the MCU can represent even more voices than ever before.

Alonso explained how important it is to her as a gay woman to see Marvel Studios’ plans become more inclusive. “There is something really magical about being seen,” she said. “When we see you, shame flows like there’s no tomorrow. There’s a layer of shame that goes away, there’s a layer of ‘I don’t belong, I don’t. not deserve, I am not worthy ‘that goes away a way. “

Rise Munich will be led by Sinje Gebauer, studio head at Munich-based Isar Animation, who will join the company in August.

It will function as an independent creative unit within the Berlin-based Rise Group, which also has offices in Cologne, Stuttgart and London.

In addition to several Marvel productions, Rise has been the originator of visual effects on Amazon, Netflix, Apple TV +, and HBO series such as Babylon Berlin, Stranger Things, Dark, and Westworld.

The new division will see Rise expand the size of its existing studio in Munich, which has been overseen by Managing Director Dominik Trimborn since 2016.

Trimborn decided to leave the company, with Gebauer taking responsibility for all operations of Rise Munich, including running the Munich-based VFX office as well as the new animation studio.

Rise Munich will focus on animation projects from Rise Pictures’ production roster, with a particular focus on visual development and concept art.

The space available at Rise Munich will have tripled by the end of July, initially to accommodate up to 80 new employees, with the aim being for the animation studio to employ 120 people.

Prior to Studio Isar Animation, Gebauer worked as a senior visual effects producer responsible for visual effects on films such as Aquaman and Tomb Raider.

Channel 4 announced that Julie Walters, Hugh Dancy and David Harewood have joined the voice cast for the 2021 Christmas animated special Terry Pratchett’s Abominable Snow Baby produced by Eagle Eye Drama.

Eagle Eye Drama is the production company recently launched by the team behind global drama brand Walter Presents. They will perform the show in association with Narrativia, the independent production company launched in 2012 by Sir Terry Pratchett.

Terry Pratchett’s Abominable Snow Baby, based on one of the best-selling short stories by legendary author Sir Terry, tells the story of a quintessentially English town that is turned upside down by a huge snowfall and the dramatic appearance of a 14-year-old Abominable Snow Baby feet high. Shunned and feared by the townspeople, Snow Baby is saved by an indomitable grandmother who, along with her grandson Albert, welcomes him into her home, flooding her new pet with love and affection, changing the perception of the city and helping the community to overcome its initial prejudices.

Julie Walters (Harry Potter, Mamma Mia, Paddington) will be the voice of the fearless “Grandma”, while Hugh Dancy (Black Hawk Down, Ella Enchanted, Hannibal, Downton Abbey 2) will take on the role of his brave grandson ‘Albert’ with the narration of ‘Homeland’ star David Harewood (Homeland, Supergirl, Blood Diamond)

Commissioned by Channel 4 Head of Drama Caroline Hollick and Commissioning Editor Gwawr Lloyd, the program is supported by a grant from BFI’s Young Audiences Content Fund, the program will be directed by Massimo Fenati and produced by Tess Cuming, with Eagle Eye Drama’s Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino oversee the project as joint creative directors and with Rob Wilkins as executive producer for Narrativia.

Created with traditional hand-drawn animation techniques to capture the timeless nature of Terry Pratchett’s story, The Abominable Snow Baby is part of a long and established tradition of Channel 4 animated Christmas specials such as The Snowman, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, and last year Quentin Blake’s The Clown.

Channel 4 Drama Manager Caroline Hollick said, “The original Channel 4 Christmas animation has become a real highlight over the years and this year will be no exception. I am delighted that Julie Walters, Hugh Dancy and David Harewood bring this wonderful, funny and moving Christmas story to life. I know it’s only July, but with this amazing cast team I can hardly wait… it’s definitely going to be a Merry Christmas Terry ‘

Film experts said China’s cultural heritage is a rich source of inspiration for creators.

The film premiered in Chinese theaters on July 9, grossing more than 58 million yuan at the box office on Sunday, according to Chinese ticketing platform Maoyan.

Many Chinese moviegoers are delighted with the newly created and fresh domestic production.

It tells the story of Meng Yuan, a young handyman who became a hero after experiencing trials and trials.

“The difficulty of making the whole movie has reached the highest level in China,” said director Lin Yongchang.

According to Lin, the production team of nearly 1,000 employees created a total of 1,746 characters using 5,000 computers simultaneously. “The special effects of the last battle took almost 2 months to perfect. The entire film contains over 2,700 special effects shots,” Lin said.

The proud general, released in 1956, fully incorporated the artistic characteristics of Peking Opera into the animation. An animated lion dance film will be released later.

“Traditional Chinese heritage such as shadow play, paper cutting, ink painting, and Peking opera have all been tried in Chinese animation and comics, and some achievements have been carried out. creation of the animation, ”said Shi.

“The heart of Chinese animation is getting richer. However, Chinese films still have a long way to go to achieve huge global success. It depends not only on a successful film, or a talented director but also a producer who can master the whole situation and mobilize the resources of all parts of the film industry, as well as a mature Chinese film industry system, ”said Xiao Fuqiu, based film critic on Sunday. in Shanghai, to the Global Times.

The film won the 24th Shanghai Film Festival Golden Goblet Award nomination for best animation.

CANNES: After making one of the most successful adult animated films of all time in “Waltz With Bashir”, Israeli director Ari Folman has vowed never again to tackle the mind-boggling complexity of such projects .

But when he got the chance to bring the iconic Anne Frank story to the children’s big screen, he couldn’t resist – even though it ended up taking his life for eight years.

“Where’s Anne Frank,” which debuted at Cannes this week, is another beautifully drawn cartoon, and its first to appeal to a younger audience.

Folman readily admits that’s because his last attempt at adult animation – “The Congress” starring Robin Wright and Harvey Keitel – was a huge flop.

Although critically acclaimed, the film was “a box office disaster,” Folman told AFP in an interview in Cannes.

“I harassed so many people, I raised $ 10 million, I had hundreds of animators, and then no one saw the movie!

“I thought, more adult animation. If you want to deal with these incredibly difficult productions, it should be for a large audience, which means a family movie,” he said.

It helps that “The Diary of Anne Frank” remains one of the most beloved and important books of the last century.

Folman’s film follows Kitty, Anne’s imaginary friend from The Diary, leaping between the present and the real-life story of Anne and her family in hiding from the Nazis in occupied Amsterdam.

“(Anne) has become a part of my life in a way that I can’t even explain,” Folman said. “My youngest daughter was at the screening, she’s 14. She told me she can’t remember life without Anne Frank. She was six when I started.”

– “Bad as hell” –

The film seeks to go beyond the iconic image of Anne, Folman said.

“She’s an icon but more than that, she was a teenage girl – isolated, in her teens, funny, mean as hell, a great watcher of adults, seeing each other’s flaws, attacking them. She was a lot of fun. . I thought we should see all aspects of his character, ”Folman said.

The film seems aimed at a large audience, although Folman says he would need a serious brain to take on another animation project.

“For the next movie I’m looking for a mathematician or a chess player – I’m not kidding – to do the math,” he said.

This is because there are so many moving parts to consider with an animated film.

“Where’s Anne Frank,” for example, had 1,100 shots, each going through 11 different stages, spread across 12 studios in different countries.

“Every delay impacts every part of the chain,” said Folman, half laughing, half despairing. “If you miss something, you are missing half a million dollars. No one can calculate it.”

“My dream is an alien machine that can see all 12,000 elements, with every change happening in every studio, how long it takes and how we can fix it. I haven’t found any. Maybe Kasparov can. make!”

The in-app effect, called “Photo Animation”, has been used in over 80,000 videos and gained popularity this week, triggering several parallel trends in which users are applying it to photos around their homes. Once the effect settles on a face, it begins to animate its features, causing the eyes to blink, smile and move the eyes of the person in the photo.

To use the effect, search for “photo animation” on TikTok and click on the effect search result. From there, you can add the effect to your favorites for access in TikTok’s video editor, or immediately shoot a video using it. To access the effect in the video editor itself, click the effects button to the left of the record button and find the app in your favorites.

In addition to celebrity photos or other images, many use the effect to resuscitate photos of family members they say are deceased. Some of these videos generated a wave of support in their comment sections, sometimes prompting users to post other videos remembering family members in the photos and sharing information about their lives.

“I tried this after seeing yours,” a commenter wrote under the @ rainss.kk video in which she applied the effect to photos of her mom. “I just wanted to say thank you. I got to see my grandma smile again.”

Another trend associated with the effect sees users applying the filter to a reflection of their face in a mirror, leading to a strange effect in which the mirror image has a different facial expression than the person themselves.

And, according to some TikTok videos, the effect doesn’t just work on photos – some users have also successfully applied it to artwork or collectible action figures.

This is not the first time that a photo animation effect has taken off on TikTok. PopSugar reported in March that users previously used a separate app called MyHeritage to animate photos of loved ones before uploading those results to TikTok.
