When it comes to superhero movies, it’s hard to argue that the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t the biggest name in cinema. Four of the ten highest-grossing films in the world are superhero films, and all four are installments in the MCU. They’ve dominated the landscape and expanded their empire in both the number of movies and TV series created over the past year and a half (otherwise known as the start of “Phase Four” of the MCU). Included between Avengers: Endgame, Wanda Visionand Spider-Man: No Coming Home, it’s arguably clear that Marvel has been the undisputed champion of the “Marvel or DC” debates since the Christopher Nolan years.
However, DC movies have had great success over the years, with movies like The black Knight and wonder woman changing the superhero mainstream, first 15 years ago and then five years ago. Warner Bros. is looking to make 2022 the year of the DCEU with five hot movies based on their rich catalog of characters, and upcoming DC movies are catching the eye. The studio is looking to offer something for everyone, from kids movies to gritty reboots, as well as a massive multiversal epic that will rewrite the DCEU. With the exception of bat girl (and his return of Michael Keaton’s Batman), slated for release in 2022 but only slated for HBO Max, these are the five most anticipated DC Comics-based movies slated for release in 2022.
5 DC League of Super Pets
DC has already released animated films in theaters, from Batman: Mask of Phantasm in 1993 to The Teen Titans Go! At the movie theater in 2018, but DC League of Super Pets is set to introduce a whole new kind of hero to a new generation of viewers on May 20. The movie will see Superman’s dog, Krypto (Dwayne Johnson, in one of the two DC movies on this list) team up with an assortment of pet shop animals. who were given superpowers in order to save the Justice League. Due to Marvel Studio’s strict adherence to continuity, their studio is unlikely to make an animated talking animal movie outside of the main story, but DC and Warner Bros. are ready to take this chance and experiment, eventually reaching younger audiences, making the film their gateway to more DC stories. Adults could also get in on the action, given the incredible cast of voice actors, including Keanu Reeves, Kevin Hart, John Krasinski and Natasha Lyonne, plus Kate McKinnon and several other hilarious comedians.
4 black adam
After first touring the project in 2007, a year before the MCU kicked off and The black Knight would be released, Dwayne Johnson finally has the chance to bring black adam on the big screen. This time, instead of being the bad guy in a Shazam! film, Black Adam will be the star of his own image. The film will see the character do battle with the Justice Society of America, which includes Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo). At DC FanDome 2020, Dwayne Johnson promised the public that the balance of power was about to shift in the DCEU, hinting that Black Adam is about to become a major player to which characters like Wonder Woman, Shazam and maybe Superman will face it. One of the biggest movie stars on the planet is about to make his mark in one of cinema’s biggest franchises, and Warner Bros. gave it a July 29 release date.
3 Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Aquaman was a surprise hit when it hit theaters in December 2018, grossing $1 billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing DC film of all time, even more. The black Knight, which puts a lot of pressure on the future Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom four years later. Returning director James Wan appears to be up to the challenge, hinting at a larger-scale superhero movie that will see the return of the villainous Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) as well as Arthur’s brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson), who will be an unlikely ally. While Aquaman was a resounding success in the winter of 2018, the sequel to 2022 will have more underwater competition, as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in November of that year, he was rumored to introduce Namor and Atlantis to the MCU. In addition to that, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will open the same day as Avatar 2, which will use innovative 3D technology to explore the seas of Pandora’s moons. This little competition puts Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in a particularly interesting place, where you will have to think big and offer something unique to stand out.
2 The Batman
The liberation of everything Batman the movie is a big deal, though The Batman seems to regain a spirit that hasn’t been felt in years. With the March 4 release date, there is a bigger time gap between The Batman and the release of batman begins than batman begins and Batman in 1989. Similarly, it is also the restart of the Batman franchise, which stars a ridiculously highly anticipated all-new actor (Robert Pattinson) in the role. The Batman will see him take on some of his most iconic foes, including Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) and both Penguin (an unrecognizable Colin Farrell) and Riddler (Paul Dano), who haven’t been seen in a Batman movies since the 1990s. The Batman takes place outside of the DCEU, while Warner Bros. continues the tests with which they began Jokerwhere they make a standalone film with a strong directorial vision to see if audiences will accept multiple incarnations of the same character.
1 the flash
the flash is arguably the biggest and most convoluted upcoming DC movie, even though The Batman seems to be the most talked about. The movie has been in development since 2014 and has gone through four different director changes, and now the scarlet speedster’s first film is set to hit theaters on November 4th and will drastically change the DCEU forever. Inspired by the Breaking point comically, the film finds Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) traveling to an alternate reality where his mother is still alive, and where he will come face to face with Supergirl (Sasha Callie), but also fan-favorite Batman (Michael Keaton). from 1989 Batman movie. Much of the film is being kept under wraps, even the film’s main villain is a mystery, and rumors are swirling that even more cameos from former DC actors will appear in the film. With a multiverse storyline first hinted at when Miller appeared in the CW crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earthsas well as Ben Affleck’s final appearance as the DCEU Batman, the flash should mark the end of a chapter for the DCEU and the beginning of an exciting new phase. 2022 is DC, Phase Two, and it looks like a big one.
