How each character’s gear and gadgets can make them unique

Batman is an ever-influential character whose mythos is celebrated in Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham franchise. The gear inventory synonymous with Batman houses tactical gadgets for use in different circumstances, and players have surely grown accustomed to gameplay geared towards the Caped Crusader in particular. However, it is clear that new DC titles, Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, attempted to distance themselves further from Batman as a playable character.

Instead of, Gotham Knights departs from the iconic Batman mantle and creates its own continuity to focus on popular Bat-Family affiliates instead. This won’t be WB Games Montreal’s first foray into the Batman mythos, however, which previously developed the Batman: Arkham prequel entry in the series. Each of the Gotham KnightsThe playable protagonists have been confirmed to receive a lot of individual attention and attunement, and it will be interesting to see how unique Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood feel through their gameplay.​​​

Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl, for example, wields a tonfa in Gotham Knights as a potential nod to his late father’s role as Gotham City Police Commissioner. The simple single-handled stick was featured in Gotham Knights‘ official gameplay presentation as his melee weapon of choice, and it provides fast and acrobatic strikes. However, each character will also have a ranged weapon as well as gadgets, leaving plenty of room for their playstyles to be authentic to their identity.

Traditional batarangs will return Gotham Knights, as seen when Batgirl opens up on Mr Freeze with a quick batarang attack. However, it looks like Batman’s explosive gel spray and crypto sequencer will be replaced by much more complex and creative gadgets in Gotham Knights. At one point in the game’s official gameplay showcase, for example, it looks like Batgirl, Robin, or both are synchronously releasing a swarm of bats that rain down some sort of airstrike in the area.


Indeed, many attacks can be performed as a double takedown option between the player and their NPC or co-op companion. Batgirl also launches a projectile of sorts that floats around and repeatedly hits a targeted enemy, which can be a Batgirl-specific gadget or one shared by each of the Knights.

One of the other similarities between the characters that was shown in Gotham Knights‘The gameplay is the traversal functionality and how that will be balanced. All characters will presumably be able to perform grappling hook dashes to scale the verticalities of skyscrapers in Gotham City’s open world, but the Batcycle is depicted with Batgirl running through the streets to the objective, complete with ramps impromptu from which the player can jump. If it is possible for every character to have access to the Batcycle, Gotham Knights‘ Robin is proof that the crossing will not be identical from one character to another.

Batman: Arkham fans will be familiar with his iteration of Tim Drake’s Robin and the combat that revolves around his collapsible staff. Robin appears several times in Batman: Arkham City, from its main story to its matching battle challenges and story-driven Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC. He then returns to Batman: Arkham Knight in a similar capacity, and as a result, fans have seen the character’s attack animations and styles many times before.

Gotham KnightThe Boy Wonder iteration seems to offer more of the same with a bit more flair. What makes Robin unique in Gotham Knights has to do with his potential traversal abilities, as Robin will use the Justice League’s Watchtower teleporter for traversal as well as struggling from perch to perch. Robin appears in the official gameplay showcase and performs a teleporter takedown on an unconscious enemy by teleporting to them and teleporting with them subdued.


This suggests that each Knight will have a unique traversal option aside from the regular grapple gun, though this may be a trait exclusive to Robin and Batgirl. In terms of gadgets, Robin’s Staff may contain retractable armor that blocks ballistics like it does in Batman: Arkham City. Otherwise, the options are relatively open and may be closest to Batman’s inventory.

Unfortunately, neither Dick Grayson’s Nightwing nor Jason Todd’s Red Hood were depicted in actual gameplay for Gotham Knights. As such, what equipment, gadgets, or abilities they may have are purely speculative at this point. However, with knowledge of how Nightwing has been portrayed in gameplay before, some early guesses can be made.

Nightwing athletics and gymnastics can be expected from Gotham Knights‘ iteration of the character, just as he was depicted in his Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight appearances. Additionally, Nightwing’s Escrima staves are perhaps the Bat-Family’s most unique weapons, wired with electric tasers to stun and incapacitate enemies. Players can preempt many of his attacks to distribute electricity and deal stun damage, for example, with chained electricity between nearby enemies.

Nightwing is rarely shown with any other fancy gadgets or abilities, but there may be gadgets that enhance his gymnastic prowess. As for which characters have the most to catch up on in terms of gadgets, Nightwing needs to have plenty of creative projectiles and gadget abilities to keep up with what other characters have already been introduced to.

Red Riding Hood

Red Hood is lucky Gotham Knights have the most freedom of interpretation. Red Hood was featured as another short DLC for Batman: Arkham Knight with a janky double gun mechanic that could be abused to stun enemies endlessly. Otherwise, WB Games Montreal has a relatively open concept with which they can approach the character’s combat. Gotham Knights‘ Cinematic trailers have only depicted Red Hood with those signature dual guns, so any notion of his gameplay, gear, or gadgets being the weapons is also speculative.

As far as a melee weapon goes, Red Hood could be considered a melee brawler who uses his firearms for pistol shots and other attacks. Red Hood blurs a weak line for Gotham City’s vigilantes since he is decidedly deadlier than other members of the Bat-Family, at least in early continuities. It’s unclear how the balance will come into play when it comes to Red Hood’s dual guns in Gotham Knights and whether his morality will be portrayed differently.


Gotham Knights‘ gear system seems to be much more elaborate than that of the Batman: Arkham entries following multiple characters with respective skill trees. It is possible for fans to play Gotham Knights as an entirely solo experience if they choose. Amazingly, fans can also play the entire Gotham Knights as one character. Because of this approach, WB Games Montreal must strike an equal balance with each of its characters so that they can all function the same, while making them unique to each other so that they are all eclectic and fun to play. control.

Gotham Knights is set to release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.
