Haute couture fashion can be a confusing concept. With seasonal catwalks, continuous releases of ever-changing collections, and a plethora of brands vying for consumer attention, it can be difficult to get a feel for the styles of individual designers. Creative direction, however, makes a huge difference in a brand’s ethics and aesthetics, and most have a few signature styles by which their clothes can be recognized. Below is a guide to some of the more well-known designer brands; their aesthetics and what sets them apart as high-end fashion producers.

Alexander McQueen

To describe Alexander McQueen in a nutshell, that would be “controversial.” Founding his brand in 1992, he quickly established himself as the “English fashion hooligan”, breaking all the rules of fashion with his experimental and artistic catwalks. Models cast like chess pieces, Shalom Harlow spray painted live by robotic paint guns and a life-size hologram of Kate Moss are just a few of the more memorable performances. Cited as explaining fashion as an “everyday art form”, his influential contribution to the fashion world continued after his tragic death in 2011.

Balenciaga

The brand was founded in 1917 by Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciagia and is synonymous with avant-garde luxury. Her bubble skirts and signature silhouettes gave way to Gvasalia’s new creative direction to meet the modern and evolving customer’s buying habits. Now more easily recognized by its motorcycle-inspired handbags, decorated t-shirts and luxury trainers, it has maintained its reputation for uncompromising quality standards.

Versace

Donatella Versace is one of the most well-known faces in fashion, and her creative direction to the brand since 1997 has created many of the most iconic dresses of recent decades.
