The live-action sequel to the 1995 animated film Whisper of the heart released a new visual, along with some preview images. Sony Pictures Entertainment announced the film in January 2020. Studio Ghibli animated the original, based on Aoi Hiiragi’s. Mimi or Sumaseba manga.
The film’s main cast includes Nana Seino as Shizuku and Tori Matsuzaka as Seiji. Yuichiro Hirakawa is directing the film which was originally scheduled for release in September 2020 but was later moved to October 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking about the new film, original manga author Aoi Hiiragi commented:
It’s been 33 years since I drew “Whisper of the Heart” and 27 years since it was made into an animated film. Hearing the passion of the staff who grew up watching the film, I was intrigued by the new take on the story 10 years later. Now that a new live-action movie has been created, I wonder about the characters that are completely out of the hands of the original creator. However, I guess it’s always the parents who are thrilled and excited to see what kind of world they’re going to show us. The world has become darker due to the unexpected pandemic, but I hope this movie sheds some light on the world!
A trailer for the new live-action movie was released in April this year. It is set to be released in Japan on October 14.
The original animated film was directed by Yoshifumi Kondo and animated by Studio Ghibli. Hayao Miyazaki wrote the screenplay. According CinemaMorethe film earned more than 3.15 billion yen in total box office receipts in Japan.
