Marvel Reportedly Casting A Major Non-Binary Character For Ironheart

A rumor suggests that Marvel Studios is looking to cast the MCU’s first non-binary character, who will play a major role in the Disney+ series Ironheart.

Marvel Studios is reportedly looking to cast the first-ever non-binary character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who will supposedly play a big role in the upcoming Disney+ Original Series Stone heart.

According to a Patreon post from industry scooper Daniel Richtman, aka DanielRPK, Marvel is looking for a non-binary, genderqueer, or genderfluid actor of any ethnicity who is in their 20s or early 30s. (Non-binary is an umbrella term for gender identities that are neither male nor female.) The reported casting call is for an unnamed character who is described as “extremely intelligent, shrewd” and “balanced.” According to Richtman, this character will appear in all six episodes of Stone heart.

If this report is accurate, it remains to be seen whether the character in question will be an original creation from the series, or a version of an existing Marvel Comics character. Notably, there are a few canonically non-binary characters in the Marvel Comics Universe, though none of them seem to have a direct connection to Riri Williams/Ironheart.

There has certainly been a recent increase in LGBTQ+ representation in the MCU. For example, the Disney+ series Loki eventually confirmed the on-screen version of the God of Mischief (played by Tom Hiddleston) to be bisexual. Additionally, the Marvel Studios movie Eternals highlighted Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), the MCU’s first openly gay character, who is portrayed as having a husband and son.

Interestingly, however, if Richtman’s report turns out to be accurate, Stone heart wouldn’t actually be the first screen project under the Disney banner to feature a canonically non-binary character. That honor belongs to the Disney Channel animated series The owl housewhich introduced the character Raine Whispers (Avi Roque) in its second season.

Marvel Studios first announced in December 2020 that it was developing a live-action Stone heart series for Disney+ as part of the MCU, with Dominique Thorne attached to play the role of Riri Williams. The six-episode series has no release date, although production is expected to begin in June in Atlanta. In addition to Thorne, the series cast Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) and Lyric Ross (It’s us). However, before Stone heart Coming to Disney+, Thorne Set to Make MCU Debut as Riri in Upcoming Movie Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverwhich is currently slated for theatrical release on November 11.

Created by Brian Michael Bendis, Mike Deodato, Eve Ewing and Kevin Libranda, Riri Williams/Ironheart made its first full appearance in 2016. Invincible Iron Man #9. In the comics, Riri is a teenage student at MIT who manages to create Iron Man-like armor using materials stolen from campus. While Riri’s exploits initially land her in hot water, the original Iron Man himself, Tony Stark, has just taken on his role as the world’s last armored superhero.

Stone heart is one of two major MCU Iron Man-adjacent series currently in the works for Disney+, the other being the one helmed by Don Cheadle. Armor Wars.
