Mattel Headquarters Tour, Preview 2023 Masters of the Universe Action Figures

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Masters of the Universe, and it was a momentous occasion for Mattel, the creator of the franchise. There has been a further resurgence of the franchise with two Netflix animated series including 2021’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Masters of the Universe: Revelations. Mattel continued to produce action figures, and at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con there were exclusives like the He-Man vs. Skeletor 40th Anniversary 2-Pack. The company has more in store for collectors and fans, and Nerd Reactor was invited to its headquarters in El Segundo, Calif. to see the upcoming figures in person and take a tour.

While touring Mattel Headquarters, we had the chance to experience different parts of the building including the 3D Scanning Center, Model Shop, Sound Lab, and Eternia Room.

The sound lab

I was surprised to learn that a toy company had a sound lab, and this is one of our first stops. A few of our group were able to get into the sound booth and try out their best He-Man and Skeletor vocals. A snippet of the cartoon was played on screen, and they were asked to act out and match the lip-sync to the scene. One member really had the power of Grayskull on his side and captured Skeletor with his own hysterical grip.

The model shop

The model store was part of where the magic happened, giving toymakers a better look at the final product. The rooms had different 3D printing machines, and there were lots of parts and accessories lying around for testing and prototyping. An important aspect is the color chart on a table to ensure colors are accurate and consistent.

3D scanning center

The 3D scanning center is a huge room with a ball-shaped tent in the center. Inside this tent is a bunch of cameras that take all the photos and create a 3D scan of the individual inside.

With the photos captured, the results are then taken to the model shop, revealing the finished product.

We had the honor of entering the Eternia room, a place for Musclor and Masters of the Universe fans. It features action figures, statues, and merchandise from the franchise over the years.
