Here’s some incredibly cool news to end your day: Introducing Getaway, a new Marvel superhero from the mind of the io9 co-founder and award-winning author Charlie Jane Anders. The beginning of Escapade’s journey begins in Voices of Marvel: Pride #1 which follows the young superheroine’s career as a thief and explores her trans life mutant. Its story is written by Anders and drawn by the nominated artist and cartoonist duo of Eisner Ro Stein and Ted Brandt, with color by Tamra Bonvillain as the central story of the collection.
“As far back as I can remember, I’ve loved the Marvel Universe, and I may or may not regularly sing the Spider-Man cartoon theme in the shower. So I was thrilled to be able to introduce a brand new hero to the alongside all my favorites,” Anders shared on marvel.com.
Escapade, whose real name is Shela Sexton, is a trans mutant who can instantly switch physical locations with another person or exchange any specific physical or abstract attribute such as possessions, organizational status, skills, superhuman powers and even situations! Escapade can only maintain power for a few hours at a time and must be within seven feet of its target, and the more complex the switch, the greater the risk of an accident.
Luckily for Escapade, she has an invaluable partner by her side, her tech-savvy best friend Morgan Red, as well as a tool belt containing an arsenal of stolen tools and devices. Together, Escapade and Morgan travel the Marvel Universe as professional thieves, robbing criminal and corrupt organizations…until an encounter with Emma Frost and Destiny changes the course of Escapade’s life forever.
Anders added, “I hope Escapade and Morgan Red inspire trans and non-binary people around the world to believe that they too can fight for justice with the power of creativity and chosen family.”
“It’s very exciting to be a part of introducing a new character to Marvel comics,” Stein said. “Working with the Charlie Jane script has been a lot of fun, and I hope people enjoy reading Escapade as much as we did preparing for its first outing on the page.”
“Now more than ever, we need a hero like Shela Sexton for people to look up to,” Brandt added. “It was a real honor and privilege to be part of his creative process!”
Voices of Marvel: Pride #1 will be released on June 22. Getaway is set to return in the fall in a special story arc from New Mutants from Anders.
