A number of casting call character profiles for “My Adventures with Superman” have leaked online, giving us a better idea of the characters we’ll be seeing in the upcoming animated series.
Used to give casting directors an idea of what they’re looking for in voice talent auditioning for roles, the character cards (which also featured rough artwork) made their way online before being quickly taken down.
While Krypton is being destroyed, we’ll meet Superman’s Kryptonian parents, with Lara described as a “proud, loving, brilliant woman.” However, Brainiac (described as an evil robot) will create a Lara simulation to torture Superman. This evil version of Lara will despise Kal-El “for his kindness and mercy – qualities utterly unbecoming of a Kryptonian warrior.” This “clever, sharp, and shrewd” version of his Kryptonian mother would quickly become one of Superman’s greatest enemies – “because while other villains might break a bone. Lara has the ability to break his heart.”
From the description of Jor-El, Superman’s Kryptonian father, it is unclear if this “proud former citizen of the mighty Kryptonian Empire” is still alive in this version of the story, as he is described as a “well-meaning but easily frustrated” the man due to “his inability to speak English and his refusal to tell the whole truth about the last days of Krypton gets in his way”.
With stories firmly anchored in the Daily Planet and focusing on the friendship of Clark, Lois and Jimmy, we’ll also get to meet “a hard-headed sports reporter” Steve Lombard. Steve will act as something of a mentor to young journalists, though he has a “swaggering machismo that comes in the form of aggressive high fives and always taking the stairs”.
While Lois will one day become a great journalist in her own right, at this point in her career, she looks up to Vicki Vale, “four-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Gotham Gazette reporter, and an all-around icon.” Although Lois may disagree with Vale’s methods, as she is described as “willing to do whatever it takes to get her story” and “extremely confident, shockingly amoral, and able to spin an interview so quickly. that those interviewed do not know what hit them”.
Superman and his friends will come up against a number of villains, but with new twists. Siobhan McDougal (aka Silver Banshee) is the leader of a small group of criminals known as Intergang. However, she is looking to take things to the next level and wants to go from robbing convenience stores and trying her hand at robbing a bank when she comes into possession of stolen experimental weapons. Among the Silver Banshee gang are Mist and Rough House, the latter being described as a “disgraced boxer and petty criminal”, though “not the brightest”.
Petty criminals won’t be the only problems Superman will face, with a new version of Mr. Mxyzptlk also set to appear. While still a fifth dimensional being, this version of Mxy “constructed a weapon that can warp the fabric of reality”. Described as a “god of chaos”, Mxy uses his technology for his own amusement. “Mxy is hyper-intelligent, always one step ahead of the authorities, and just wants to have a good time.”
The character designs seem to incorporate a fairly diverse range of ages and ethnicities, with Vicki Vale either Native American or Asian-American, while Steve Lombard and Rough House are also Asian-American.
