The Sleepy Poet Antique Mall will open in a new location on November 1

Sleepy Poet Antique Mall opened over 20 years ago as a consignment shop. It has moved to three South Boulevard locations over the years, including 4450 South Blvd., in this 2008 file photo. It is now moving to a fourth location.

An antique shop in Charlotte will reopen next week in a new location after a $ 5 million investment.

Sleepy Poet Antique Mall will open Monday at 6424 South Blvd., less than three miles from its lease at 4450 South Blvd. This last shopping center will close on Saturday.

The mall, which opened over two decades ago, has hundreds of vendors of antiques, collectibles and vintage items.

It will take time for sellers to move all of their merchandise to the new location, so the grand opening is November 19, the mall said on Facebook.

Owner Dickson Shreffler purchased the 48,000-square-foot, 6-acre industrial building for $ 4.5 million, the Observer previously reported. He spent about $ 500,000 to renovate the mid-century building, reusing about 70% of the building and materials.

Shreffler had hoped to open the new site with room for around 300 vendor spaces over the Labor Day weekend. However, it took longer to get things done than he expected. “It went well,” he said.

What to expect

The new location, while smaller than the other store, has a larger sales area and is more organized, Shreffler said. It is well lit with wider aisles and a clearly marked checkout area.

The new store will also open with a separate vinyl store called Poet’s Vault. Shreffler’s son Joshua will run the record store and his son Jason will run the mall.

The new space includes parking and will have room for small festivals, food trucks and live music.

Poet’s second location on West Main Avenue in Gastonia closed in May after opening five years ago after Shreffler sold the Kress building. Compleat KiDZ, a child development center, now occupies the historic building, the Gaston Gazette reported.
